Student Life

At Fawakih we see learning as a holistic process, involving many dimensions beyond just classes and homework. We try to cater to all the different aspects, recognizing that doing so will lead to not only a great summer but a more significant and profound learning experience.

Academics
Fawakih is an educational program at its core, and students are expected to attend all classes on time and prepared. Arabic is the most demanding, and the typical homework load ranges between 1 and 3 hours a day, along with several quizzes and a test every week. Religious classes may also include take-home assignments depending on the teacher and subject.

Boarding
Students are encouraged to board and live on site, as we believe this contributes to the overall experience. Boarding allows a greater focus on one’s studies as well as facilitating the making of deep bonds between participants.

Food
Depending on the location, cooking may or may not be an option in your housing. If it is not an option, there will be several restaurants nearby along with meals provided occasionally on behalf of Fawakih. There will also be potlucks, a popular event (and contest) students held last summer!

Fun
Fawakih strives to provide opportunities for students to have fun and relax their minds, bodies and souls a little. In fact, we consider these to be a very important part of our summer program and its success. Opportunities include sports (basketball, soccer, football, Ping-Pong, and hiking), parties (pizza, tea), and trips to National landmarks in D.C.

Personal Guidance

Fawakih staff is training to become deeply proficient in their knowledge of other Islamic and Arabic studies programs, as well as scholarship and professional opportunities in order to counsel Fawakih students on how to continue their personal progress after the summer.

Time with Scholars

Each program provides ample opportunity for students to spend time discussing issues with the on-site scholars either individually or in small groups. This could be a range of topics, from what are the best avenues for seeking knowledge to help with a personal problem.
